We often hear of the risks associated with too much sun exposure and while these are all real threats and the use of SPF is essential, it’s equally true that a healthy dose of sun exposure is also very beneficial for our physical and mental health. The sun is the best natural source of Vitamin D - which modulates cell growth and reduces inflammation. Vitamin D also improves our bone and teeth health. When sunlight touches our skin, our bodies release nitric oxide into our blood which lowers blood pressure and improves heart health. We also soak up serotonin from the sun which boosts our mood and helps us feel more calm and focused. It can also help improve sleep quality. And while excess sunlight can contribute to skin cancer, a moderate amount can actually have preventative benefits for some cancers such as: colon, ovarian, pancreatic, prostate and Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Additionally, a healthy amount of sun exposure can help treat the following skin conditions: psoriasis, eczema, jaundice and acne. Of course, let’s not forget to always use SPF and stay moderate with how much sun exposure we get every day! 15 minutes a day is a perfect dose to soak up all the positive benefits. 🌞
