"Regain control through laughter"

Updated: Jun 22, 2020

Laughter can be a very powerful coping tool in times of crisis - it’s a way to manage the unmanageable, to gain control of a situation and feel agency.

We don’t need to think of it as an out-of-touch escape or as a misunderstanding of the seriousness of our current situation - but instead as a way to create a sense of human community, to communicate about shared values and to spread joy during a difficult time.

Laughter relieves physical tension in our muscles and also positively stimulates our lungs and heart. Laughter even decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies. Laughter also triggers the release of endorphins - promoting an overall sense of well-being.

Let’s always check our privilege, stay kind and within the bounds of good taste, but let’s also keep laughing, sharing the joy, and allowing humor to help us heal.
